Is it too risky to leave from San Gerardo de Dota to go to the airport?

I know it is about a 3 hour drive.

My flight leaves around 2pm.

I'm going to the transfer provided by the lodge and they said I can leave anytime I need to.

What do you guys think?

You're supposed to be at the airport at 11:00 then, so if you left early in the morning you could probably do it. But is it on a weekday when you might hit rush hour? Traffic near San Jose can be a real nightmare during the week. It's up to you -- it also adds 3 more hours of traveling to your day if that's an issue.

Yes, it is supposed to be a Friday that I leave. But it could maybe be changed to a saturday.

The additional 3 hours don't really matter. I can go home and rest for the weekend :)

Getting by those slow moving trucks while going over the mountains could slow you down as well. I would discuss with your lodge real time possibilities to figure out what time to leave.

We usually do that trip in about 3 hrs so that is a good time to figure on.

Are you staying at Savegre or Trogon. We really enjoy the Chacon family at Savegre.

Several times we've had lengthy delays [ 1 to 2 hours or more] caused by everything from accidents to rockslides to civil unrest.

I personally would probably go back near SJO the previous afternoon, just to be safe.

Just spent a few days in San Gerardo de Dota--Hotel Savegre de Montana (Chacon family). Breakfast begins at 6:30. If you left at 7:00, you should be okay. Traffic into town shouldn't be much of a problem because your driver will know to take the loop around town that will bring you near the airport. That said, as Jerry mentioned, you do run the risk of some type of traffic snafu slowing you down or halting your progress. Probably not, but it COULD (and does occasionally) happen. It's a calculated risk we all think about taking from time to time. . .good luck!

The weather there was gorgeous--plenty chilly at night. Melvin and Marino both told me that quetzales are almost as common there now as sparrows. And it must be true--one or more were right next to our back patio off and on every single day!
