Is it Safe to Travel by Bus in the Yucatan?

We traveled widely by bus in Mexico during the 1990s without concern for our safety. Now we are considering a sightseeing trip to the Yucatan, Palenque, and San Cristobal de las Casas in February, 2010. Is it safe to travel in this region by inter-city bus?

We went from San Cristobal to Palenque, then to Camnpeche and finally to Cancun by bus a couple of years ago. No problems.

Yes, absolutely. The buses are quite nice with a/c, bathrooms and movies. I'm taking one from Playa del Carmmen to Merida in Dec and use them all the time up and down the Riviera Maya.

We've not tried the buses yet as driving gives us the flexibility and convenience we want.
If you're prepared to drive yourself look into car hire as it can be as cheap as the bus (we're paying $10 per day with Avis this month).

For that price, are you paying for the extra insurance? I will not rent down there without it and even then, and with how much I've rented down there before, I hesitate because of the multiple scams that go on all the time.
