Is it safe to honeymoon in Venezuela?
Hi there!
We are looking to take a 3 week honeymoon in June 2008. Right now it is between Venezuela and Honduras. Venezuela looks more interesting to us, but also seems to have more crime.
We would stay along the coast - Coro, Roques, etc.
We are 30 somethings, and have traveled independently quite a bit.
Thanks a ton!

Honduras is probably safer than mainland Venezuela at this point. Was on Margarita and in Venezuela years ago. Loved it.... not as impressed with Isla Margarita as I was with the mainland. Too bad about the unrest & crime, it's an incredible place.

My opinion would be Honduras, though I haven't been there personally- it's on the list and I've heard rave reviews. Venezuela felt semi-safe, nothing happened to us but we felt undertones. Can't quite put my finger on why. We went to Margarita via Caracas for a week last year and felt very crowded and didn't "get away from it all"- lots of tourists, wall to wall on the beach, at least where we stayed (El Yaque). Other side of the island looked very lush, but still crowded. You'll be there towards the end of prime windsurf season, I believe, though its good year round. Los Roques would be very different from Margarita and mainland.

Hi bobbietilkens,
My wife is from Venezuela and I have been there five times. The last time I was there was January 2004.
I am a light-skinned American and so is my daughter. My wife feels that it is too unsafe for my daughter and I to go there now with all of the crime, political unrest, social upheaval..ect. The scenery in Venezuela is the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen, but I would think carefully about traveling there at this time. My favorite places there are Margarita Island (especially Playa El Agua and La Restinga), the island of Coche and Cubaqua, Los Roques, Mochima National Park and Morrocoy National Park.
