International Driving License
Is there a way to obtain one of these while in South America? I forgot to get one here, and the only place I know to do it is AAA.
|
The local version of the AAA emits international licenses and I don't see why you couldn't get one there:
http://www.automovilclub.cl/home.asp I have a feeling that the kiosks for renting cars in the airport (just outside arrivals) have a way to get them too. It would be worth asking. |
My answer is for Chile only. Why not ask in the forum for your first country in SA?
|
Are you in the US now or in SA? Are you renting a car? When in Grand Cayman, we always get one at the car rental place. I don't remember what we do at other places - hubby usually drives so I don't pay attention.
|
Thanks, i'll check it out at the rental places.
leaving today, and not even sure if i will be renting, but figured it would be good to know whats up in case renting is the best way to get somwhere. |
Do you require an International permit? I rode a small Honda last year from Veracruz, Mexico, to Tierra del Fuego (www.simongandolfi.blogspot.com). My standard British driving permit surficed. Possibly the police and border officials took mercy on me because of my age (73).

It isn't the police who are bothered but the car rental companies. I don't know why, but some won't rent a car unless you have one. No doubt they can provide one!
|
In Argentina you don't need one, your home country driver's license is fine. Keep in mind, however, that rental cars may not b taken across the border to another country.
|
Needed one to rent a car in Santiago, but not in Argentina.
Knew in advance to get it from AAA ($10. via snail mail from central Mexico to FL, USA). M |
