I wore 100% deet bug repellant and six weeks later, a bot fly larvae crawled out of my back. I am pretty sure I got it at the jaguar reserve. The mosquitoes there were heinous.

Ew. I think the mozzies there were the worst I've seen anywhere in the world with the possible exception of the Indian Heaven Wildnerness area in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest on Mt. Adams in Washington state. One full day there during our 2003 trip it POURED all day long - the only time that's happened in 6-7 summer weeks spent in Belize. Couldn't have been better timing as heavy rain = no mosquitoes!

We returned March 19 and had a wonderful time. I will try to put together a trip report soon. We have been very busy since returning.

Can't wait to hear all about it!!

Glad you had a wonderful time! Looking forward to your report.

We are traveling to San Pedro Belize this week and staying for one week. Arrive Feb 18th and depart Feb 25th. How bad are the mosquitoes right now? Can you guys bug spray there? Also can you buy sun screen there too? Let me know. Thank you

@ TravelingGuys: You might want to start a new thread, rather than adding on to a 6.5 year-old one. BUT FWIW, you can, of course, buy supplies once there -- but whether approved by CDC or safe for the environment is, I believe, not guaranteed.

No need to start a new thread -- lots of good information here.
I've lived in Belize and never used insect repellent -- the mosquitoes are just not that bad (usually). You can buy sunscreen here, but if you have a favorite brand, better bring it. |
