Info. on Shangri-la Caribe,Playa Del Carmen??
 

Hi Everyone,

We are planning our yearly family trip for Thanksgiving and looking at staying at a non-AI this time in Playa del Carmen. We typically like higher end resorts, need nice beach and quick access to the beach (my 8mo niece will be with us), action on beach (people watching, etc.), and close to town.

We are considering the Penthouse rooms at Shangri-La Caribe. If anyone has current info. on this resort, I'd sure appreciate it. We are trying to make a quick decision since things are filling up!

Hello Cookbound! In case you haven't checked out Tripadvisor.com, there's a quite recent review (from June 3) of Shangri-la Caribe by folks who stayed in a Penthouse room. Also has interesting info on the road there, etc.

Hey cookbound, just in case some rooms open up at Shangri-La, I'll give you some info that may help.

Just returned from Shangri La two weeks ago where we stayed in a Penthouse room on the Aventura/Playa (never) section of the resort. It isn't higher end per se, since it is more laid back and a bit rustic, so if you are expecting a mint on the pillow and that sort of thing, you won't get it there. There is also construction on a lot next door, so if a bit of noise bothers you, then maybe Shangri La isn't right. However, there seems to be a lot of construction in the entire PDC area, as the town is changing and growing very quickly.

YWaht you will get is extremely friendly service, a great (included) breakfast buffet (banana bread is fabulous!), very clean rooms, and the most amazing view ever from the balcony of the penthouse room. Ours directly overlooked the pool, the palms, and sea....it was breath taking. You could see Cozumel day and night.

The beach in that area is much wider (as of now) and quieter than further towards town in Playa. It is a very nice beach with plenty of palapas and loungers for hotel guests. Lots of security on the property, although they were not intrusive in any way. I didn't see any problems anyway. There is also service provided on the beach for drinks and food. Cabs are plentiful and quick to get to and from town for dinner or shopping. (Dinner is included, but we opted to go to town each night). Town was less than a 5 minute cab away.

As for your 8 month old niece, I am sure it would be fine there, however; you may want to rethink the penthouse rooms, since I think there are about 50 steps to these third floor units. Not sure how fun it would be to keep carrying a baby and all the gear that goes with them up and down the steps all day. But the penthouse rooms on the side I stayed on were definitely very close to the pool, which is right on the beach.

Hope this helps! If they are filled up, try Las Palapas. It is right next door, so the beach is similar and they have the rustic cabana thing going on too.

Thanks to you all for info. We went ahead and went for it and booked our rooms, got the last few available 2 penthouse rooms and garden view on Playa side.

Thanks Elizabeth for your review, excellent info and very informative. We kinda figured it was a more rustic feel there and not too fancy, but excellent service is more of what we look for, so I'm very happy to hear that you had that there. I'm really looking forward to this trip. My sister is rethinking the penthouse now though. :)
