TC That is not what I would call an unbiased article.. lol Its not that I think Mexico is dangerous. .but I simply do not believe the stats in that link,, like what ten times more kidnapping in Canada then Mexico. baloney.. thinking they are counting things like non custodial parents taking kids as kidnapping which is not quite the same as the kidnapping for randsom in some areas of Mexico( not notably the touristy areas so relax folks)
And as for more rapes in Canada, thats because WE REPORT RAPES and count "date rapes" etc. but,, in Mexico the average girl./woman is not interested in making her rape public information.. its not ok there still, ( they are still a bit dark ages about rape there folks) so more women do not report rapes..
I think this was a fair question, as a Canadian we have heard of drive by shootings ( and that is not common where I live ) and I have also heard alot about young men getting beat up in towns after drinking nights out,, which may be why some tourists prefer staying in AIs.
I repeat, I am NOT saying Mexico is any more dangerous then anywhere else, just saying that some people do have some concerns and they are not completely unfounded.. Its hard to be somewhere unfamiliar and perhaps not understand the language or know which neighborhoods not to wander into ... even where I live there are some places a LOCAL knows to avoid and a tourist wouldn't .

comparing Canada to Mexico with such broad statements is a disservice. There are areas of Mexico that are safe and areas that are less safe. there are very few areas of Mexico not safe for tourists. cartel related crime rarely affects tourists. those that stay in AI's because they are afraid of Mexico do not process information well.

I cant help but feel a little dismayed whenever I read an article relating to safety in Mexico especially the Yucatan peninsula. HOW SAFE IS RIVIERA MAYA. Most certainly safer than any major city in the US and Canada. I lived in Playa and have been spending 7 winters there since 2001. Please, the whole of the Yucatan peninsula has got to be one of the safest and most tourist friendly areas I have ever had the pleasure of discovering. The people are genuine and helpful. I am told that the media and Hollywood have a lot to do with the bad publicity that is associated with Mexico.
Do yourselves a favor and enjoy your time away from the violence that we live with in our own cities !
