It's not too current but I made the trip in 04. We took a shuttle from Antigua, left at 4:00 a., stopped at 7:00 in Teculutan for breakfast for about 45 min, then stopped at the border (Frontera de Florido) to pay exit/entrance taxes, and rolled into Copan at 10:30. Copan is very close to the border, probably 15 miles or less.

Our trip took about 6.5 hrs . . . if you had a car, probably could do it faster.

Hope this helps,
Sandy (in Denton)

4-6 hours, depending whether you stop enroute, on your mode of transportation, and the time it takes to cross the border.

Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't be in a private car, rather on a shuttle or chicken bus.

How long is the shuttle trip? If I go by chicken bus is there a nice place to spend a night to break up the trip? I heard Chiquimula is not worth a night's stay.

Shuttle trip is more like 6-7 hours and chicken bus more than that. Personally, I'd just shell out for a comfortable, quick, safe trip on Hedman. I know people say it's not worth the $20-30 extra over the cost of a (packed, uncomfortable) shuttle, but to have a trip be relaxed and comfortable and quick is worth a lot to me. Just my 2 quetzales' worth...

Sorry just to make sure I understand - by Hedman you mean shuttle, which takes 6-7 hours? Or is Hedman different from shuttle?

Thanks hopeulist! (Again, you also helped me out on Thorntree :)

Hedman Alas buses are 1st class - sort of like an airiner, with reclining seats, snacks, movies. I think the Guatemala City to Copán run is about 5 hours, add an hour if leaving from Antigua.
