How long is the ride from GUA to Lake Atitlan?
 

Trying to put together an itinerary for a Jan/Feb trip to Guatemala and Belize.

I have found a flight that would put us at GUA at 12:20PM.

My thinking is to start at Atitlan, then to Chichi, then Antiqua, Flores, Tikal and over to Belize. It seems most everyone starts in Antiqua, but that also seems that we would be backtracking part of the trip?

So - how long is the drive to Atitlan?

Your plan to first visit Atitlan then Antigua is a sound one. It is much easier to be in Antigua the night before flying to Flores as it is much closer to the airport (45 mins). Remember that the Chichi main market days are Thursday and Sunday.

About Chichi? Tentatively we plan to be there on Sat night for the Sun Market. However, is one better than the other? What is the difference between the Thurs and Sun Markets?

I have only been to the Sunday market and it is huge and fascinating. Make sure you visit the vegetable market when you are there. The market will be very crowded so be sure to carry your valuables in money belt of some type.

More visitors are there for the Sunday market than the Thursday one. Thee's also more going on at the church in terms of elaborate masses. (You're not allowed to take pictures inside the church.)
