We did a day trip on our own a few years ago. We had been staying in Playa del Carmen (actually had been there a couple of times) and didn't think we wanted to go to Xcaret. Then we got over to Cozumel and for various reasons, went to Xcaret from there. You've got the trip by ferry back to the mainland. That's not very expensive. The ferry docks right in Playa del Carmen and you could catch a cab to Xcaret - I don't remember the cost, but it can't be much. You could also take a bus from PDC to Xcaret. (That may have been what we did.) The advantage to doing it on your own is that you can stay as long as you like, as long as you're back in Playa del Carmen in time to catch the ferry. The evening show had been highly recommended, so we stayed for some for that. Admission at the time was $40 USD, so it was definitely cheaper to do it on our own.
