Liz, this is particularly for you! I went ahead and took your advice and we stayed at the Copacbana Palace. Both my husband and I were glad that we did. Although we booked a standard room (the lowest priced of the "Unforgettable Rio Package") we were given a two room suite on the 4th floor with a pool and beach view. The package included breakfast, round trip airport transfers and a city tour. The package price was $990 US and was to include 10% service charge, 5% tax and an additional $3.00 a day tax. When we recieved our bill, it was in Reals and we ended up paying less than $200 a night with all of the taxes and service charges included. We also ate dinner at the Cipriani. It was one of the most enjoyable meals I have had in many years. We each had lobster and with a bottle of wine and the tip the bill was around $85US!
Also, a note to those "Blameitonrio4travel" bashers. We went by their office, met Bobby and Marianna and booked an Iguazu Falls package. I can highly recommend doing business with them. Liz, we travel extensively and I just want to thank you for one of my most enjoyable and memorable trips. The Hotel has a few problems (mostly the maid service), but overall it was a fantastic and special vacation!

The problem with this board is that anyone can post with any made-up address. Who's to say that promoters of a certain hotel are behind a post?
Anyway, do independent research before booking. Liz has been known to say that the Copacabana Palace has the only hotel windows that open in all of Rio. Not true.

Good morning Margaret, It was a pleasure to help you and David. I hope to see you back in Rio real soon. Rio and Brazil are very special. Once again thank you for stopping by and saying hello.

Bobby

For "Really?" Believe me, I am for real. I was the original poster on this board and had truly agonized over the choice of a hotel. Even if Liz was covertly pushing the Copacabana Palace (and I don't think she was) I truly enjoyed the Hotel. Those who enjoy the beach scene might be better off somewhere else, but for us and our lifestyle, it was perfect!

Margaret, nice to hear the positive feedback, thanks for taking the time to write. To others, I specifically said the Copa Palace is the only 5 star with windows that open. Among many other reasons to stay there! I live in Sao Paulo, am a US citizen married to a Brazilian and am always delighted when folks get down to Brazil and have a wonderful time. I have no connection with the travel business other than having spent years of my life travelling for business and knowing the in's and out's of many travel situations and locations. So glad you did have a great time! Take care.

By the way, have you noticed who has not used a legitimate e-mail addresses? It is those people who question others motives. Feel free to write me personally concerning any questions you might have. I also highly recommend a side trip to the Iguazu Falls... breathtaking!

Well I just got back from Rio too, spent a good week at the Hotel Debret. This hotel is really shaping up, new windows, new floors and elevator and all this with the best front room view in Rio for about $50 a day. The lobby is no comparison as to the Copa Palace but I never spend too much time in the lobbies anyway especially in Rio. All I did was sleep there and the windows open up too can you imagine and for $50 a day. The hotel staff knows you by name and they didn't even charge me for the last day half day that most hotels charge. And I had plenty of money left over to eat in fine restaurants including Cipriani and other favorites.
