Hotel Villa Del Sol in Zihuatanejo

We're planning a trip to Zihua. and Villa del Sol. Has anybody ever stayed there and is it nice, clean, etc.? I bargained via email with their reservations & they offered us a substantial discount. Is that the norm during summer and the low season? Just wondering and maybe a little worried.

We have been to Zih. twice. We have never stayed at villa del sol, but our friends did. It was the nicest hotel they have ever stayed in. I know they paid close to $600.00 per night. They had a private pool in their room. I know the grounds are beautiful and of course la ropa beach and all the restaurants are outstanding.

We have been to Zihua many times. The Villa Del Sol was voted top 10 beach front prop. by Conde Naste Travel Mag. in the world several times. It is very beautiful. Just hope that you like "Hot" weather in summer time.

I would say it is not the norm to get a discount at Villa and I would be careful. We just returned last night and had a little issue with our room. Paid 750/night for 2 bdr suite and got a room called Garden Suite 1(dark, busy pathway and no hammock), this room is so different than Garden Suite 2(bright,tons of room, hammock and a cd player) that we finally got on our last night after four days of bitching. The resort is amazing along with the food and service(well, good for Mexico). They were 90% occupied when we were there and you can tell they tend to cater to people who go there year after year(older people, sorry being honest). We are in our early 30's and were by far the youngest. Don't get me wrong, we had an amazing time, but there were some bumps and at $700/night in Mexico, this shouldn't happen.

We've been going to that beach for over 20 years, but VdS is a little rich for our blood. The Hotel Catalina is nice, about a third the cost, and shares the same beach. It's not state of the art, was built in the 50's, but has a charm we like and a very nice swimming pool. We like to save the $300 or so per night and spend it on other stuff. In the summer, though, you will want A/C, so you might try the Villa Mexicana next door, or the big, new Club Intrawest at the end of the beach. I'm sure you'll get the absolute lowest prices of the year at any of them in the summer. One thing, quite a few of the local restaurants close in the low season. Check out www.zihuatanejo.net website for more info.

While Villa del Sol looks nice, I prefer Casa Que Canta. My husband and I are going back for the second time in May. Villa del Sol is on the public beach, but Casa Que Canta is nestled into the cliff just a short walk from the beach and all the rooms have amazing ocean-views. It is so romantic! I could go on and on...check it out, I think the rates are about the same.
