Hotel tax

I know that there is a 20% hotel tax in Argentina... do I get that money back when leaving the country? Any details appreciated. Thanks!

I do not think so. The good news, In Uruguay they do not charge IVA tax to tourists. ( Only the poor burden Uruguayans have to pay)

I mean in hotels.

In hotels it's 21% and you DON'T get it back. If you SHOP in certain high end tourist-oriented places, you can get most of it back.

Translation of AV's message: Shop in places where you will be charged 100% more than in shops frequented by locals and receive 21% back. Your net is only 79% above the growing rate, but you feel good because after waiting in a long line at the airport they put cash back in your hand. :)

Your math is almost as bad as your Spanish, Doc, but that is the general idea. LOL!!!

My suggestion for shopping in Argentina: cash in hand and say you don't really need an invoice.

Lo mismo, cash talks.

Translation of AV's message: Pay cash off the books so you and the business can avoid paying 21% tax. Call it a cultural immersion experience, since it is part of the way business is done in Argentina :)
