Just returned from CR on 6.11.00, and stayed at Las Cabanitas in Arenal. Very comfortable, clean cabins. They are located very close to La Fortuna on the east side of the town (Volcan Arenal is west of town). Surprisingly good food in their small cafe, very well organized and maintained, but do keep in mind that these are cabins and not a complex or hotel room. You will awake every morning w/ rooster crows, cow moos, and the sound of some traffic (due to your proximity to town). Also, not every cabin has an ideal view of the Volcano (not that there is any assurance you will see it in its entirety during your visit).
We found the accomodations comfortable, but given a 2nd visit to Arenal, I & my wife feel we would perhaps prefer Montana del Fuego (sp?) which is much closer to Arenal and further outside of La Fortuna.
While in La Fortuna, I highly recommend a horseback trip provided by "Alberto" (can be booked through the Tabacon resort). Alberto runs his tours from his home in La Fortuna, is very knowledgable, gracious, and kind. This proud father of 3 (we even met his wife and saw his 3-month old son) treats his animals very well and has a respect for the land and the people.
