Hotel Caribe in Merida, Mexico

Hi, all. I'm doing a last minute trip to Merida next week. I have my flight and am looking for hotels for a one-week stay. Has anyone stayed at Hotel Caribe recently? I am considering the standard room.

Any recommendations for other places to stay in Merida would be appreciated. I've heard good things about Dolores Alba but I'm waiting for a response. Thanks!

We stayed at the Dolores Alba in Jan. for a week. We payed 380 pesos a night for a double with a private bath and a/c. The room was probable the largest we had during our 3 weeks in MX and very nice. They don't take credit cards. It's a very good small hotel. The only problem we had at all was with the 3 1/2 block walk to the plaza along a very crowded and grubby street. The businesses along the street all seem to be open until about 9:00 p.m., so it wasn't as if you're walking along a deserted street at night. We just got a little tired of the stroll. There is a nice pool, 2 courtyards, and a small restaurant.

They did have a notebook of tours that you can book through them. Don't know how good they were since we did everything on our own. The women at the desk were very helpful. We're now WELL acquainted with MX buses.

Have a great time.

The Caribe is really a good choice! The facilities are good and you can't beat the central location.
Enjoy!

We are also considering Hotel Caribe and Casa San Juan B&B. Has anyone stayed at the Casa San Juan B&B in Merida? Comments?
Vita, please tell us how long it took for Dolores Alba to respond to your room request. Do you have to pay a deposit before arrival?

Hi, ww. I decided to go with Caribe because I was getting anxious about booking a room before I left. I just decided to go to Merida a couple of days ago and I leave this Thursday so time was of the essence.

Dolores Alba did get back to me a few hours after my original post but it seemed to just be a form letter with information I already had. They have two locations and didn't seem to notice that I had indicated Merida in my request. Like I said, I was in a rush to decide. I think it took them about two days to respond.

It's odd how perceptions are different.

A traveler talked about 3.5 blocks' walk from Dolores Alba along a "grubby" street. I've done that walk many, many times and I would call the street a "street," not a Beverly Hills street but not a Newark, NJ street, either.

Merida is a very old city (hence, its streets have been nibbling off sidewalks for years to accomodate autos and trucks) upon which modern Mexico has been superimposed -- in most cases with only moderate influence on its charm.
