Hotel / bungalow suggestions, Yucatan south of Cancun

We will be traveling in April from Cancun to Chichen Itza (one night) to Merida (three nights) and then driving to Tulum, where we have another four nights before we fly back to the US from Cancun. We have hotels arranged up until we arrive back on the Caribbean coast (Tulum), and are wondering if anyone has suggestions for clean and comfortable non-resort type places to stay.

We can be anywhere between Tulum and Playa del Carmen ... looking for a more "Mexican" experience than a big resort, doesn't have to be beachfront, but not too far from the beach - five minute walk is okay. We're budget conscious, but not looking for anything too rustic, like no hot water.

We don't know the area, and not sure which of the towns along the way are best for kicking back and relaxing for a few days. I speak passable Spanish.

Thanks!

We enjoyed staying in Tulum Pueblo, though you'd have to taxi to the beach. We were there in June when it was HOT and having a kitchenette and ac was important to us. We liked walking to good local and tourist restaurants, produce stands, groceries, etc. and the hotel we chose - Posada Luna del Sur - was really excellent; check out the trip advisor reviews! Ive also pasted the link to our photos and travelogues below. Have a great trip!

You have lots of options between Puerto Morelos and Tulum. Each town has it's own personality. Tulum is known for it's small cabana type accommodations along the beach, many have minimal electricity and water. Akumal is a quiet enclave of condos and hotels. Puerto Morelos is the most 'Mexican' feeling town, even though it's just 1/2 hour south of Cancun. It's a quiet fishing village with a handful hotels and apartment rentals, a long, sandy white beach, and a small downtown with some good places to eat. We stayed at Cabanas Porto Morelos, which has large comfortable apartments just across the street from the beach, and about 5 blocks walk fronm the downtown.
