hotel availability in august
I have reserved some hotels in early august (Si Como No and Capitan Suiza). The former quoted 196 dollars/night(including tax) and Suiza quoted 120(w/o tax). This seems too high to me. What are the prospects like if we just go w/o reservations and see about deals when we get there?? Thanks for any advice.

Fang,
It looks like we will be doing the same itinerary in August and staying in the same places. The prices you were quoted sound about right (Si Como No maybe a bit high - what type of room is that for?)
I made my reservations a couple of months ago because I wanted a specific bungalow at Capitan Suizo. While I don't know about Si Como No, Capitan Suizo was full when we were there last year in August. And I mean full beacause we wanted to stay there for 6 nights and only got 3 nights. We made reservations in early July last year. So if you really have your heart set on these two places, I think you shouldn't risk it.
By the way, in both of these places breakfast is included in the price.

July and August are popular months here in CR, European travelers all take their vacations in AUgust so the demand is much higher than in the rest of our "green seson". You can find rooms here in AUgust, it isn't like January where everything is overbooked and you are hosed if you don't have a reservation, but it is busy....
I own a hotel in Manuel Antonio as well.
It isn't the luxury spot that Si Como No is, but we have a special for 70 and 80 dollars for the months of July and AUgust. We also have a/c, direct phones, color cable tv, bar, restaurant, hot water, 40 mile ocean view....etc.
You may want to check it out...
www.hotel-california.com
We did a million dollar remodel and re-opened last January so we aren't as booked as some of the more established places...
Whatever you decide it is gonna be fun...For those who will be here on the weekend of September 3rd we are planning to have a "county-wide" cook-off contest to raise money for the school for kids with Cerebral Plasy, it ought to be quite fun! I hope you will add it to your list of things to do!

Best warm wishes,
Robbie Felix
Hotel California
www.hotel-california.com

We are going to CR for 2-1/2 weeks beginning Aug 2; my plan was to book for the first weekend we're there (Fri arrival in Tamarindo) then wing it from there. I'm sure there are better deals avail but the two places you have chosen seen pretty popular and very nice, I understand, which is to say "high end" for CR. I'm going to check out Connie's suggestion; I would also point out that Robbie Felix (Happy Bob!) is a very helpful guy and according to my guide book has a nice hotel in Manuel Antonio area. Good luck!
