Can only comment on AP. We've stayed several times, like the location, the grounds, the bungalows, and the price. Have also heard good things about AS. Doubt you'd go wrong with either, and I doubt one is any better than the other. AP has a set of 18 ziplines on their property, if that appeals to you right on site.

Also, keep in mind that the lava flow is around to the south and west these days. You won't see it from either of the hotels you mentioned--unless its changed and I haven't heard.

We stayed at AP in March and again in June. Didn't see any lava either time, but had a wonderful view of the volcano both times.

Will you have a car? Have you considered Arenal Observatory Lodge?

I would have loved to stay in AOL, (or any of the hotels on the lava side) but we are planning our trip for this coming December, and everything is booked up. Is there a nice place to go at night to watch the lava? We will have a car.

Once you are there, you hotel (either of them) will be able to hook you up with some viewing.
