Honeymooning in Belize
My fiance and I are considering honeymooning in Belize. We are looking at the Belize Yacht Club, the Victoria House and the Banyan Bay. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which is the best place to stay? We plan to go in August.

Thanks

P.S. Is there any place to jet ski in Belize?

I feel sorry for you. What a mistake to plan your visit to Belize in August

I'd opt for VH and love the thachted roof casitas with ac on the beach. Banyan Bay are all two bdrm villas,so that won't do.

Weather in August averages as follows:
87/73, always coller on the coast. Average rainfall is 8.18 inches.

Katie Valk
Belize

Of those three hotels, I'd say either Victoria House or Banyan Bay. Victoria House has a variety of accommodations, from motel-like to deluxe owners' cabanans, and it's a nice resort in a lovely setting. Banyan Bay has very attractive two-bedroom suites and the beach here is a little better than at VH.

Of course Ambergris Caye is only one small part of Belize, and not really representative of the country.

--Lan Sluder
Belize First Magazine

I notice neither of the 2 people from Belize who posted above bothered to inform you that:

1. August is one of the months which is referred to as a monsoon rainy month.
2. August is one of the months officially classified as "hurricane" season.

The above information is from one of the commercial websites to promote travel to Belize. I suggest you read it for yourself. Then, you can make an informed decision for your honeymoon.

Congratulations and best wishes to you both!

http://www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/quick.html

Hurricane season in the Caribbean begins in June and concludes Dec 1. Average rainfall for August us 8.18 inches, less than Sept and more than July. Our chanciest month has always been October. You may want to consider travel insurance whether you decide on Belize, our other Central American neighbors or anywhere in the Caribbean and Southern US.

Katie Valk
Belize

"Truth in advertising,"

Of course August is in the "hurricane season." But hurricanes are fairly rare in the Western Caribbean in August -- if they come they usually come in September through early November, and before Hurricane Keith last September/October the last major hurricane to hit Belize was 40 years ago. You are much more likely to have a hurricane in the Southeastern U.S. or Texas in August, or anytime, than in Belize. Guess we should warn folks from traveling to one-third of the U.S. in August, right?

Belize does not have a "monsoon" season. Seasonal rains usually start in June and continue off and on through the fall, but I've spent many Augusts in Belize when there was no more rain than you'd get in Atlanta, and often less. True, it can be hot and humid if there's no breeze -- this is the subtropics after all, not New England -- but there's no reason to avoid the Western Caribbean in August.

--Lan Sluder
<I did the Belize section of the new Fodor's Guide to Belize & Guatemala>
