Honeymoon in Playa del Carmen -- where should we stay?

We will be honeymooning in November. I have been doing some research and Playa del Carmen sounds great. We want a nice hotel, all-inclusive, and very romantic. Any suggestions?

Also, how long does it take to get to Cancun and/or Cozumel from Playa?

We stayed at the Iberostar. What a fantastic hotel! Absolutely beutiful grounds. Spider monkeys, lizards, tucans. Great beach and HUGE pool. Cancun is an hour bus ride but okay for a few trips. Go to Xlha ( pronounced shell ha). Great for snorkeling and swim with the dolphins. The myan ruins were pretty boring. We did several tours in Cancun. There is a night time booze cruise and island show that was really fun. We did the jet ski tour through the jungle ( aqua world). The food was okay but it is an all inclusive. Anything else just e-mail me.

I chuckled when I read Scott's comments re the Mayan ruins. I personally love the ruins - Tulum is not exceptional from an archeological standpoint, but the setting is awesome. Coba in the jungle is amazing. (On the other hand, the nighttime booze cruise and show that he enjoyed sounds boring to me! Oh well, we're all different.)

Xelha is supposed to be quite good for snorkelling. There are also several cenotes that are interesting in that area. We always stay in Cozumel for a few days - that's only a 45 minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen and very easy to get over there and explore. I'd recommend it for a day trip.

There are loads of good hotels and restaurants in Playa del Carmen - they really experienced a growth spurt over the last few years. If you decide not to go all inclusive, there are lots of nice places.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

In a couple of weeks I am staying at the El Faro, which is right on the beach in the middle of Playa del carmen _ I think they have a modified all-inclusive plan, some but not all meals included. try finding them on the internet at www.boutiquehoteles.com
There are plenty of nice, inexpensive restaurants right in town if you don't get a totally inclusive plan. I think you'll like Playa a lot _ just sophisticated enough without being as in-your-face as Cancun. As for the ruins, I love them too and always recommend at least one visit. Tulum is not as spectacular as Chichen Itza or Coba, but the setting is gorgeous _ right on the beach. have a great trip!

sorry, forgot the last part of the answer... cancun is about 45 minute drive from playa. i'm assuming you're flying into cancun. your hotel might pick you up at the airport; else you'll need to get a taxi, which i believe runs about $45. (for some reason it's only $30 to $35 the other way.) There is a bus also, only a few dollars, but you have to go from the airport to downtown to catch it.
