Honeymoon in Playa de Carmen - Suggestions needed!

Hi! My fiance and I are going to PDC May 31 - June 10 for our honeymoon. We booked through the Apple Faresaver, so we will not find out which AI we are staying at until the day of the wedding - but I'm sure it will be fine.

My question is... I've been to Cancun several times, but it's always been with my girlfriends and it's been dedicated to playing and partying hard. Obviously with this being our honeymoon, I would like more romance. We have several days to check things out (and he's never been there) so I'm thinking Chichen Itza, Tulum, Cozumel, Coba, Cancun, Isla Muj, etc.

My questions are:
1. Should we rent a car? We did in the past, but I remember it being very expensive. Who has good deals? And do we need international driver's licences?

2. Any tour companies or websites that have good rates on tours?

3. We did a catamoran (I think I spelled that wrong) to Isla Muj that allowed us to swim with a shark and do a spinnaker (I think that's what it was called) that was really fun. I can't remember the name or find anything on line. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

4. We are interested in a dinner cruise. I've done the pirate one (not very romantic IMO), so are there others that are more geared towards couples?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

After lots of digging, I think the tour company for the day trip to Isla Muj is Don Diego... any info on them?

With 10 days, renting a car for at least part of the time might be a good idea. The driving is easy once you get out of Playa, and there is lots to see. Car rentals are quite inexpensive but you should get the whole insurance package in Mexico. Rate are usually cheaper at the local companies like Ace/Executive, America, etc. Check locogringo.com for lots of info.

Your list of places to see sounds good - you could do Tulum and Coba in one day if you leave early enough.

If you really want to visit Isla Mujeres, I'd do it on your own. Head to the bus station in downtown Playa and hop on a bus to downtown Cancun. Then get a cab to Puerto Juarez and catch the ferry to Isla. All together it shouldn't cost you more than about $20.00 one way for transportation. Then you'll be on your own time while on Isla.

Great suggestions! I think we will try to do Tulum and Coba in one day... it sounds doable and will still give us lots of time at both to explore.

Thanks again for your thoughts!

Remember that cruise ships will be docking and visiting Tulum. Years ago we had a tour guide who told us that the cruise ship people have to leave mid to late afternoon to re-board the ship. Go to Coba first and leave Tulum for tha late afternoon when the cruise ship people are gone.
