Honeymoon in June 2011: what's the best destination/plan?
 

Hi all,
I will marry on June 18th, 2011 :)
I'm thinking waht's the best destination/plan for the period June-July and I suppose that Mexico (or central america in general) could be a good choice: isn't it?

We love cultural sites and discover new cultures... but also have a relax time after the wedding hardships :-P
So... let's plan! I could have 15/18 days of vacation. What's the best plan in your opinion?

You'll want to check the weather history in the various destinations you mention. I know for some of the beautiful resort towns west coast Mexico (Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas) which I love and would normally suggest for a destination wedding, mid-June into July is the beginning of the summer rainy season. Assuming you're wanting an outdoor wedding, that's something to consider.

What are you looking for in a honeymoon? What kind of accomendations - hotel, resorts, AI, non-AI, villa, boutique. What activites do you want to do or do you want to spend all your time on the hotel property. What budget do you have? If you can give us more specific as to what you're looking for then we can give you better suggestions.

For the Caribbean/Mexico area the weather should be fine in June. June is the start of hurricane season, but really shouldn't be an issue. It will be hot, but not unbearable like August.

Belize is another good option for you.

Qwovadis has given a great itinerary! But if you want to travel a little less, you could fly directly into Guatemala and visit that area.

Guadalajara, Morelia, Oaxaca or other Mountain destinations are excellent that time of year. Perfect climate unlike the hot muggy. rainy coasts. We honeymooned at The Quinta Real in Guadalajara possibly the finest hotel in all of Mexico. Fabulous spa suites (over 800 square feet) for under $200 US per night.
You will never hear the word No at this hotel. Your every desire/need will be fulfilled!

Hi, we are considering honeymoon in central or south america from mid June 2011. We will have 3 wks and would love to hear of any recommended itineraries. We would love to start with a few days relaxation after the mayhem of the wedding. Then over the 3 weeks spend some good beach time, maybe a days scuba and get to see or experience something you don't get everywhere. We'd like a few days of luxury along the way but would prefer more unique accommodation to the large commercial hotels. We don't mind a bit of travel between locations but not to hectic. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I can't speak of central America since I haven't been, but regarding Mexico, we were in the same situation last year. Around first week of July, the only beach town without rain and pretty great weather actually, was Cabo and we were told that's pretty normal.

Here's what I posted on OC75's thread; you'd have to scale back a bit to fit it in 15-18 days but it's still my recommendation.

What I'd do is head to Guatemala and stay the 1st 3 or 4 nights in a decent place in town (lots of great options), stroll, visit the ruins, eat lunch on a roof top, maybe take a shuttle to a nearby village with a coffee/Maya music museum, people watch in the parque central, and hike a volcano if you feel adventurous.

Then head to Lake Atitlán - arguably the most beautiful lake in the world - for 4 or 5 nights and splurge on a really cool place - there are quite a few to choose from. Swim, hike, visit other villages around the lake, buy yourself some cool textiles as keepsakes.

Next hop a flight from Guatemala City to Flores (you might have to spend another night in Antigua depending on the flight time) and shuttle from the airport to Tikal. My favorite hotel there is the Tikal Inn www.tikalinn.com and, if you're lucky, archaeologist Roxy Ortiz will be available for an early morning tour - the wildlife and jungle would make it worth it even if you weren't interlaced with some of the most amazing ancient ruins in the world. From there head into Belize by road and stay a few nights in the San Ignacio area, maybe at a jungle lodge or a funky place in town - lots of great options. Do the ATM cave day trip http://www.pacztours.com/actun-tunichil-muknal.html and take a taxi to the ruins of Cahal Pech on the hill above town.

From there head to the island of your choice (stop at the sweet Belize Zoo!); most people pick Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker. Spend the rest of your vacation doing the blue water stuff that Belize is famous for and fly home from Belize City.

We spent our honeymoon in Cancun. It sounds like an uninspired choice, but it was a great time. The Yucatan peninsula offers a wide range of attractions, from Maya sites to cave snorkeling to reef diving to ecotours. It's a great spot to go on active adventures inland one day and then just hang out by the beach/pool the next. Cancun also gives you a wide choice of excellent restaurants and nightlife (we didn't bother with the latter) We've also stayed south of Cancun in the Maya Riviera, and that's a great choice as well, as it's more centrally located to the best activities.

We've traveled to Belize/Guatemala once and Costa Rica twice (going back a third time in February) and they are great destinations too. Your dollar would stretch further there than it would in Mexico, and you can do jungle exploration down there.

You could probably combine 7-10 days in Mexico with 7-10 days in Belize/Guatemala due to their closeness. You could also do Costa Rica--there's an amazing amount of stuff to see there for such a small country, and I believe the turtles may be laying their eggs on some of the beaches during the summer.

In Belize, we did a split between jungle time and beach time. There are loads of ruins to explore. Tikal in Guatemala isn't too far away and is amazing. You can also do cave tubing, canoeing, ziplines, the ATM cave - all kinds of activities. Then head to the beach. We went to Ambergris, and it was gorgeous - white sand beaches, the best snorkeling we've ever done, good restaurants in town. I love Costa Rica too, but since you specifically mentioned cultural sites, I think Belize or Mexico may be a better fit for what you're looking for. Congrats on your marriage!
