Honduras-Copan

We have at least 3 weeks in Honduras. How many days would you suggest for a good tour of Copan without hanging out just to vacation? Is there much else to do there if we are visiting the natural wonders in many of the other areas? How do we obtain a guide and do you have a paraticular guide or agency you would suggest?
We're open to suggestions.

For me 5-7 days to do the many sites.

Marina Copan hotel usually has the

best most knowledgeable guides.

One of the most mysterious unique and

unusual settings on la ruta maya...

Check out Finca El Cisne if you're planning on being in the Copan area for a few days...the place was great - horsebacking riding, coffee plant tour, 3 meals, lodging, hot springs trip, all for about $70 a person. www.fincaelcisne.com

I spent a week in Copan studying Spanish last fall, and definitely found a lot to do in the area. Every afternoon was full! In addition to the ruins, which took an afternoon (we picked up a good guide on site), we also visited Macaw Mountain bird park (beautiful natural scenery and cool birds, a bit touristy but nice), went ziplining at Hacienda San Lucas, did the daytrip with Finca el Cisne (horseback riding, springs, meals; I would consider an overnight if I were there again).

You can also do birding and nature hikes, visit nearby Mayan villages, visit the museum in town, and more. I would say 3-5 days depending on your pace and if you spend time at Finca.

I found Copan a pleasant place to spend a whole week, but my mornings were occupied with class and a bit of my evenings occupied with studying.

However long you're there, enjoy it!

...and don't forget to stop by the Red Frog for a drink!

We also loved Carnitas Nia Lola; we went there one night for dinner and sat upstairs with a great view as the sun set in the surrounding hills. At another table were more than a dozen Harley riders from around Honduras having a great time with huge platters of grilled meats and Honduran beers. The anafres there--refried beans and cheese in a hot pot over glowing coals, served with chips--were so decadent!
Enjoy!
