Don't know if this helps much, but I went fishing with a local who lives in Manzanillo, very tip of Caribe, close to Panama. He sends his 10 year old to a private school because public school is so bad. All the children wear uniforms in public school, and most go home for lunch, then return to school, although some sneak off to the soccer field instead (they love their futbol). According to this local, atleast in his area of Costa Rica, most 7-8 yr.olds in the public school system can barely write their name yet. The teachers just don't do too much with the kids. Hope this helps you somewhat.

Oh ! Just a little trivia that can actually help our Central and South American friends ...... Buy Fair Trade coffee , cocoa , sugar ....etc. Profits go directly back to the farmers and communities , they are also encouraged to produce their crops organically , thus helping their own health and ours . Cocoa Camino offers a variety of products . Every little bit we do helps ! lol , highjacked my own post !!!

it's a good thing because I know more about shade grown organic coffee than I do Costa Rician schooldays

Not sure if too late but in Panama (sure it's similar in CR based on seeing kids on the streets)... Most schools start at 7:30 am and finish around 2 or 3 pm depending.
In Panama they get Social Studies (local and world), Math, Spanish, English (now mandatory although teacher quals not great), PE and other courses but don't have list handy.

Cheers,
Andrew
