I have not, but it is on my list for next trip :) This board doesn't have much traffic, but you might check out Trip Advisor if you don't get the help you are looking for here.

I've heard a bit about it and from most reports, it's a lovely place very laid back but with a bit of a mosquito problem.

Here's a fairly recent discussion

I have no personal experience but have seen it written up in various travel magazines.

I think we are going to give it a try next winter...met someone from Mexico in a bar in Boston, and he had nothing but good things to say about it...beautiful, laid back, not many people, etc...Trip Advisor has rave reviews...so it seems like a good plan...

Please post back if you do. As you can see it's a spot we could definitely use more info about here on the forum!

Suze- We have decide to take about 6 weeks to see Oaxaca, some of the Mayan Ruins & ending up at Holbox the last 2 weeks.
I'll keep you informed.

There's a swimming with whale sharks season there, I think - might be worth looking into. We chose Isla Mujeres for that adventure over Isla Holbox in 2010 based on reports of clearer water - Holbox is gulf water and Mujeres is Caribbean. Would love to hear more about Holbox, though. Happy trails!

That sounds like a really neat trip - definitelylet us know how it goes.

Since you are planning to see some Mayan ruins on this trip, you might find the trip report from our trip in March helpful:

http://www.fodors.com/community/mexi...itza-tulum.cfm

We visited Merida, the Uxmal/Ruta Puuc area, Chichen Itza/Valladolid area, and Tulum area. Overall we visited 9 mayan sites. The area south of Merida - Uxmal and Ruta Puuc was really a highlight of the trip. The whole trip was great, but this was esspecially neat :)

Been to Holbox twice, but not for some time. At that time, it was very non-touristy. Sand streets, no taxis, few restaurants. Not much shade. No ATM. The water is nice, but not as quite as clear as Cancun's due to Holbox being at the edge the gulf. Good fishing. One trip, our hotel sent a lancha to pick us up at Puerto Mosquito and took us right to the beach in front of our hotel. On the other, we took the ferry and were dropped off at the pier with no idea where to go or how to get to our hotel. A local in a golf cart saw us dragging suitcases down the sand street and took us to our hotel. Its a cool place, you feel like you're at the end of the world, and in some ways you are. Its hard to get to unless you charter a Cessna. You can look a mile down the beach and only see a handful of people besides fisherman.
