Hijacking in Belize
A Tropic Air Cessna Grand Caravan was hijacked this morning while en route from Corozal in northern Belize to San Pedro in the cayes. The American hijacker stabbed the pilot and two passengers while trying to take control of the plane. He was shot dead by another passenger. During the ordeal, the plane flew erratically around the country for 1 hr 40 min, very much in danger of running out of fuel. Corozal to San Pedro is normally a 20-minte flight. The injured pilot was able regain control of the flight and land at Belize City's international airport, apparently just as the fuel was about gone.
Scary stuff, but kudos to the stabbed pilot for being able to take control of the plane just in time. I have flown around Belize and felt perfectly safe. In fact, I will be doing that again very soon. US man shot dead after hijacking small passenger plane in Belize |

Wouldn't you think? Both a knife & gun on board? Yikes |

I know. Right? :(
I enjoy flying in Belize. Flying can save you a lot of time overland. Because the flights are short and the planes are small, you never reach a cruising altitude of more than 10,000-12,000 feet, and the scenery is spectacular. There's enough of a demand that Belize can support two domestic airlines. Maya Island Air is the other. But this? :omg: |
