HELP with Lodging in Mexico City

Hello!

I am trying to "throw together" a last minute trip for THIS weekend. It will be Easter - is Mexico City a mistake for this weekend? Will museums etc. be open? What do you think of Hotel Catedral? We are a family of 4 (M,D, and 2 Teen boys) whoa re fairly well travelled... Looking for Ideas

How about a FABULOUS penthouse apartment in the centro historico?

Four of us stayed here 2years ago - it's even more wonderful than it looks. Owner is a terrific resource too. Her availability calendar looks open for this weekend. If you're willing to put out the bucks you wouldn't be disappointed!! If this won't work, there are a couple other apts. on vrbo in Mex City you could consider. I remember being in Taxco over Easter time - there were some beautiful processionals etc in town ... Don't know about openings/closings. . .

Most tourists stay in the Pink Zone in Mexico City. Type ;

into a search engine for lots of choice. Museums, sites and galleries are free on Sundays. A number of good ones there.

There are a number of good one day tours from Mexico City.

Be careful of petty theft in Mexico City, especially if you ride on the Metro. I even had stuff stolen by a little old woman one year.

Easter is a big holiday in Mexico, but I'm not sure how that would affect museums, etc. I would think that many Mexican families would be traveling to beach and resort areas rather than the capital.

Many people on this board speak very highly of Hotel Catedral, but I personally don't like staying in the zocalo area, and especially not on a holiday weekend. Priceline works very well for Mexico City--you cannot go wrong bidding 4-star for about $70-$80. We often get the JW Marriott, near Chapultepac Park in Polanco, and it is a fantastic hotel.

Again, I can't really speak to whether or how Easter will affect your arrangements.

I'm a fan of the Hotel Catedral. I've stayed there a few times and really like it. For the price, it's an excellent deal. I also enjoy that area. If I'm going out at night, I take a cab anyway.
