Headed to Puerta Vallarta - all 7 days Stormy :(

We are headed to PV next week, the first such trip for my boys, and after all this planning, the forecast looks stormy all 7 days. :(. Can anyone advise us on activities for young children if it is stormy our entire visit? We had hoped to teach them how to snorkel, go out on the Bay, explore bird life in the forests...I feel crushed to think of spending the entire week inside our hotel! Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Can you postpose? If flying for instance, on Southwest, even non-refundable flights can be canceled and rebooked for another time within a year. If you can't postpone, I suspect the weather won't be rainy all day, every day and maybe your activities will be different than you thought but still good. Best of luck to you.

We cannot change the schedule, sadly, but thank you for your kind thoughts! Crossing fingers the predicted all day storms will not materialize...

Usually PV gets rain in mid/late afternoon and evening.

Well it is the Rainy season BUT the storms are usually of short duration so do not despair.

for one thing most online forecasts are not very reliable, and when it says rain/thunderstorm 80% that means a 80% CHANCE, not 80% of the time.
Normally, and I repeat Normally, it will rain for about 2 hours - very heavy with thunder and lightning - in the late afternoon (Happy Hour?), in the evening or sometimes in the middle of the night.
It hardly ever lasts long unless there is a weather system off the coast and in that situation we typically get a light rain, maybe all day, but only for one day. Plus the rain isn't cold! the kids go out and play in it.

wait a minute here!!! :-)

You will have OK weather in Puerto Vallarta.

Do go knowing that Aug/Sept IS the rainy season so you'll likely get some rain, but you'll also have plenty of sunshine, plus it will be hot!

No way will you be sitting in your hotel room for a week.

cabron lives there... listen to him.

I'm not sure about going out into the jungle, but the rains will not ruin your plans of playing in the hotel pool, going to the beach, walking around town (maybe take or buy an umbrella is the rain is day-time showers).

If it does rain, you can go to the movies (there are some in English w/ only the subtitles in Spanish).

Also check over on Trip Advisor, the Puerto Vallarta forum, this question gets asked a lot in the summer months! :-)

Rainy season in the tropics usually consists of brilliant mornings with intense but not terribly long storms in the afternoon. Do your outdoor activities in the morning, and indoor activities or naps during the afternoon (the rains can be extremely relaxing).

Not sure what kind of trees there are around there, but if you're in a forest when it rains, that's not the worst situation as the forest canopy acts as a large umbrella.

You are all awesome! Thank you for the reassurance. We are going with optimism! :)

It would be nice to know how this worked out.

suze Sep 12th, 2015 07:34 AM

hola Peg, this is this person's one and only post. I'm thinking they may not come back on Fodor's to check in.

You've probably already read them, but every year I do a trip report on my fall PV trip (the past 3 years or so) you can find them on my profile page.

siempre, Suze
