frankie,
actually comparing this past hurricane season to 9-11 is accurate! only a couple of my friends are back in new orleans after katrina and rita. the pain that people are experiencing as a result of the last hurricane season is as great as the new yorkers felt after 9-11. |
thanks Karens. We were thinking of Fiesta Americana Condesa, a bit down the beach. I've been to Cancun before, and love it, do you regret your trip?
I've stayed at the JW Marriott before, a couple of hotels down from LeMer, and loved it, but it doesn't look like it may be open this summer. How'd you like the LeMeridien? sukiduper, you make a good point. I think Katrina was worse than Wilma, at least Cancun seems to be recovering much more quickly. |
Hey, frankie. I accompanied my husband on his company's 100% Club to Cancun. It was all paid for by his company so NO, I don't regret it! Even if I was paying for it, regret is a strong word - no I wouldn't have regretted it. But -- if you are into the party scene, and your favorite hot spots aren't open yet (I have no idea what the bar/restaurant status is), maybe you need to look into that.
Truly, the beach was great. My husband's company has done this trip 6 years in a row, and 3x have been to Cancun. Most people who attended are more than willing to return to Cancun every year - it's such a great place for a trip like this (such a treat so go somewhere with a great beach) and they take such great care of us. I asked my hsubnad for post trip comments/complaints his company received and NONE mentioned that we were there after the hurricane. This was one of the best trips they've had. the Meridian was GREAT - by far the best hotel we've stayed at in Cancun. On past trips we stayed at the Sheraton and Westin, and I thought they were fine, too. They aren't re-opened yet. |
thanks again, Karen. We're not partiers (except for the occasional Margarita ;)!), so I don't care about the clubs. For me it's about the beach, the sea and getting out to all the places to see in the area.
So, once again we'll go to Cancun! (Boy those folks who built Lemer. the way they did sure were smart!). |
This is an older post but could anyone update on Cancun? Is there a ton of construction (noise)? Also, silly question but it is unbearably hot in August or okay for beach and hanging out? Thanks so much for info!

Think your biggest concern out of all those is in fact going to be the heat. :-)

Wills: I've been to Cancun in August and I'm going again in three weeks. Last year the temps were in the mid to upper 90s (F) each day with a shower in the afternoons. Interestingly, it was actually hotter here in NJ while I was in Mexico.
As for damage, from the pictures my timeshare sends me they've made much progress, but there is still much to do. My brother and sis-in-law were in Cozumel about 3 weeks ago. Said beaches are ok, but much damage to foliage. They saw whole palm trees at the bottom of the ocean while diving. I'll post updated info when I return. |
Hi Chris C,
thanks for the info and the offer, but I might be there before you, so I'll do the same. I know it will be hot, but it's hot here on the east coast too. As long as there is a beach involved. |
The damage has not been corrected, completely - and the beaches in the Hotel Zone of Cancun aren't like they were before last year's hurricane. The city's trying to do a make-over, and cater to a more expensive crowd, and shed itself of the "party town" atmosphere - so some places have upgraded and raised their prices to push-out the "riff raff." Things continue to improve, so check-back before your trip. Or, if you're trying to book/decide now - maybe a different destination will be your best choice.

Just back from Cancun this weekend. I think it'd be accurate to say the place is 88% back. If you've never been before, this may not be the year to go. Since I love it anyways, it was just fine for me, and I was very impressed with the recovery so far; how far they've come in less than one year is pretty spectacular!
The beach unfortunately, is not quite the same. Almost, though. It's wonderful, but now there is some seaweed (climate change?) and the water is a bit cloudy, although that could just be the time of year. All in all, you still can't beat the kind of service the Mexican people know how to give. They're incredible. |
