kt runner "I will say when I read these posts, makes me nervous about traveling to Mexico."

I just returned from nine nights in Mexico City last night. We stayed in Condesa (The Red Tree House and Villa Condesa) for five of the nights and in Centro Historico (Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico) for four nights. We walked an average of 6-7 miles per day, visiting a number of different districts (Condesa being our favorite). At no time did any of us (we had traveling companions) feel worried. On the contrary, there is a heavy police presence in Mexico City. Every person we met was friendly (some helping us when we got a little lost), the restaurants were fantastic and the sites memorable. Always keep on guard wherever you are, but I felt safer in Mexico City than I usually do walking in Los Angeles (or many other cities in the states). Enjoy the city ... it is marvelous with a tremendous vibe!

Welcome back, maitatom! Glad you had a wonderful time and no problems! And, ktrunner, the purpose of this post was not to scare people away but just to make them aware. It’s not likely that you’ll be a victim of a scam, but should something like this happen, to be conscious and not allow it to continue. And, as you and others have pointed out, this scam, as well as others, takes place all over the world.

By and large, we also felt very safe in Mexico City, which was one of the reasons it was such a shock. But it did take place. And, as I later found out, it has happened to others around the same area. Again, given how many tourists there are in Mexico City, the chances of it happening to anyone is very slim. We’ve no idea why we were targeted, but we were the unlucky ones that day. We were also not feeling well, making us less aware of what was happening to us in the moment. I don’t think we look dramatically different than others walking that day, so who knows.

I live in NYC and pride myself in being aware and conscious of my surroundings, so this has also made me realize I need to remain aware whenever we go out, at home or in our travels.
