I've made two recent trips to Mexico: First one, in 2014, was to DF, Puebla, and Oaxaca. I would urge you to consider that combination for this trip. Trust me, you will see nothing that comes remotely close to the unpleasant sights you have seen in India. Oaxaca is Singapore compared to Bombay, Calcutta, or any other large Indian city that I've visited.

Last year I went to SMA, Morelia, and Patzcuaro. Another grat combination that could be extended to the coast, or to Guanajuato.

Both trips were fabulous and I could have easily included Guanajuato in the second trip.

Last winter, after spending 11 days in Columbia, we spent 6 days in Mexico City and 3 days in Puebla/Cholula. We had such a great time that this year we decided to spend 4-5 weeks in Mexico starting in the Yucatan, flying to Oaxaca then to Mexico City for a week, and then maybe somewhere else like Guanajuato area, depending on whether I think our stamina will hold up for another week.

I think Mexico City is one of the most vibrant, and culturally exciting cities I've visited. The museums and artwork in the various museums and buildings is fabulous.

For many years (about 15) I was disuaded from visiting Mexico City by my brother's warning concerning safety and kidnappings. Last year I ignored his warnings and went. When I came home I told him what a fabulous time we had in Mexico City. So guess what? Based on my recommendation, they are planningto go there for a week in December.

ek- On the second trip you allude to, how many days did you spend in each city and in retrospect do you think that was the right amount of time. Also, did you fly in and out of BJX for that trip?

Shelly, my time in SMA was determined by the length of the home exchange that my friend ssecured. We were there about 9 days. Flew into Mexico City and had a driver pick us up and drive us to the rental in SMA. Well worth the charge for two of us. We stopped along the way for a good lunch, too.

From SMA we took the bus to Morelia, via Celaya. Spent 3 nights in Morelia (I think) which was a good amount of time since one day was devoted to a drive to see the butteflies. We rented a car in Morelia and then drove to Patzcuaro where we spent about 4 nights, a good amount of time. I can double check these lengths of stay but I think they are correct.

From Patzcuaro, taxi to Morelia's small airport (I think this taxii cost about $35 US) and connecting flight from there to NYC via DF.

This was also a great trip and I'm happy to give you further info. I am leaving tomorrow for a two week trip so might not have much internet until I get home at the end of this month.

I would pick Oaxaca or Puebla over Guanajuato--I think that they have more to offer to tourists.
