Guanacaste or Nicoya Peninsula

I'm trying to decide if I should visit the Guanacaste area (Playa Grande, Flamingo beach, Playa Hermosa) or the Nicoya Peninsula (Mal Pais, Santa Teresa). I will be driving from SJO to Arenal Volcano, then down to Samara, eventually make my way back to SJO.

Samara's in the Nicoya peninsula, if that helps make up your mind...

I heard the roads are bad driving from Samara to Santa Teresa, is that right?

Roads in general are not good in the Nicoya peninsula. I believe there are a few paved roads, but as you approach the good locations (Nosara, Montezuma, etc) they get unpaved.

The drive to Samara is good and easy. After that, not good at all.
