Usually we can find pacakges of beans & rice (black or red beans) at the supermarket; we like those served with eggs and tortillas - we call it our Costa Rican breakfast. Maybe with sliced mangos on the side? Also look for a recpie for Arroz con Pollo (chicken with rice) - there are many variations of this favorite of all Latin America. Good luck and buen apetito!

You are referring to "GALLOPINTO"... rice and red beans, mixed and refried together........secret is , cook rice and beans separately, if possible day before, then mix and cook at low temperature, stirring all the time.
I think TICOS friend rice and then simmer it, till it is tender...HAY QUE RICO..........

When I had Gallo Pinto in CR it was always with black beans. How delicious!! I read some people say they were sick of it but I loved it, espcially with a tortilla & eggs on top. I've tried to re-creat it here at home with moderate success.

There are a few recipes here http://www.hotelsantotomas.com/recipes.htm, and more including one for Gallo Pinto at costa-rica-guide.com/Introduction/Recipes.htm.

A good place to get Tico groceries online is http://www.lapulpe.com/
