Gluten Free Belize

I'll be traveling to Ambergris Caye about a week before the Lobsterfest. Will it be difficult for me to find gluten free food? Or clean foods in general?

Simple eggs and a meat for breakfast in the morning, and fresh fish or lobster steamed or grilled for the evenings?

I am allergic to gluten, so cannot eat anything with flour - fried foods - muffins - bread/toast. It's also hidden in certain mass marketed seasoning blends in the US, as well as marinades containing soy sauce.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Food and water are generally safe, even food bought from street vendors. Restaurants on the caye are used to catering to gluten free, veggie and vegan diets. Just ask

My daughter in law visited us for a week last spring on Ambergris. I didn't realize until about a week before her arrival that she was eating gluten free. (she hadn't been a few months before).

Anyway, though I had to change a few dining plans, she had no issues.

Easy at Mexican places, she just had corn tortillas rather than flower.

Much less processed food in Belize than the US.

What you won't find are gluten free substitutes. such as GF pizza dough at pizza places and that sort of thing.

My husband is gluten free also. I don't think you would have a problem finding fresh non-processed foods. Lots of fresh seafood, veggies, fruits, eggs, etc. Same as Jean mentioned, my husband orders corn tortillas which seems to be the norm there anyway for the most part. Since English is the common language, you shouldn't have any problems asking/communicating about it.

Thanks for the responses! I hoped for the best, and it sounds like that's the case. Very happy to hear. Thanks again y'all!

Gluten isn't at all difficult to avoid in Belize. Bread is most often served as a breakfast staple, but you can always stick to fresh fruit and coffee. Fish is a great choice for clean eating in Belize - on the coast and the islands you'll see plenty of fresh lobster, conch, snapper, and shrimp on the menus. Ceviche is one of the most popular dishes in Belize. For something more filling, try Belizean rice-and-beans. They're mixed together and cooked in coconut milk.
