Getting groceries in Cancun????

We are a family of five, spending a week in a Cancun condo and looking to not eat out every meal of that week.

We are thinking of going to the grocery store when we arrive and picking up snack foods, but also some items to make a few meals in the condo rather than every meal being an excursion out.

Does anyone have experience with the grocery stores in the area? I really have no idea what to expect regarding selection in the store and how close to US selections they might have.

Also, I've read lots about good restaurants for lunch/dinners, but if we do eat breakfast out, does anyone have suggestions?

We have WALMART. Take the bus to the downtown area and you can catch a cab back to your Hotel if you have many packages. There are several small stores along the Hotel Zone but you can only get essentials there. Walmart has everything.

I once stayed at the El Presidente Intercontinental, there was a grocery store 3 blocks away toward the downtown area. My impression was that it was very similar to grocery stores in the US, they had everything, you should have no problem.

Plus there were many little restaurants serving breakfast, very good, you should have no problem.

It is completely beyond my comprehension why anyone would travel outside the US, then go to Wal-Mart.

Of course, I don't go to Wal-Mart's in the States.....

I think JeanH must think that snacks from a local market or convenience store at three times the price is more fitting of a caribbean adventure than stocking up with the exact same stuff from a Walmart in Cancun?

Obviously, I wouldn't spend much time getting there if it is out of the way, but certainly I would go to Walmart if it was nearly as convenient as anything else. I wouldn't think twice about one trip to Walmart for those types of purchases which would meet my needs for the entire trip.

Walmart is the closest large grocery store where I live in the States. I haven't been there in well over five years.

I love going to grocery stores in Latin American and the Caribbean. Huge amounts of goods squashed into tiny spaces. Things I've never seen before on the shelves and in the meat department.

Going to different stores for meat, grocery staples and produce.

That's all part of what traveling outside the US is all about, getting out of your comfort zone and experiencing different cultures.
