Getting around Riviera Maya

Hi --
Other than renting a car, how difficult is it to get to Tulum by say, taxi? Will a taxi wait for a group for hours? Anybody have an idea of cost?
We usually rent a car, but are thinking of just using chauffeur transport from the airport this summer. Can a family of 4 fit in a taxi? Or should we just go through Cancun valet or similar company? Thanks!!!

Frankie - sorry, I haven't been around...

You can easily take a taxi to Tulum, but not sure it would be the most cost effective - where are you coming from? The new Fairmont? I think.

I'm guessing a cab will cost $75/one way. You could squeeze 3 people in the backseat and one in the front. It'll be about an hour ride from the Fairmont. What about renting a car just for the day?

Thanks pepper! we've always rented a car before, and probably will again! It just seems simpler, all in all.
I do have tentative reservations at the new Fairmont, but kind of waiting to hear reviews! Also, we might break up the trip into the Riviera Maya and Cancun, so a car definitely works better...
Thanks again.

We were staying much closer at The BAhia Principe, but we took a taxi. It was much cheaper than the tour offered at the resort.

But on other occasions, we took the local bus up to Cancun without a problem. And we'd take the local bus back to the hotel from Playe del Carmen. So, I don't think it would be a problem taking the bus to Tulum.
