Furniture shopping in Mexico

Planning to visit Mexico next week. Flying in Mexico City and from there to Chiapas. Hoping to buy furniture/decorative objects while I am there. Need to know where I should go to buy well made classy furniture to be shippied to Florida. But if it's not a good idea, please advise me. Thanks.

not a good idea. Mainly because the cost of shipping back to Florida will be very expensive. At least I know its costly to send from the states to Mexico.

Perhaps Mexico is different. I'm not sure, but go ahead and check into it if you find some things you really want. We've had items shipped from Costa Rica and didn't find the shipping costs to be prohibitive. Not cheap, but we knew what we wanted and were willing to pay the $30 extra bucks for shipping. We, too, were told by some that it wasn't feasible, but it all depends. . . .

I agree with shillmac. I've had pretty large things shipped back and not found the cost prohibitive. As always, your mileage may vary.

Our favourite piece of furniture is a piece we bought here in Toronto - it's an armoire, but quite unique and unlike any other Mexican style furniture I've seen. We bought it at a small store in Toronto (which has since closed) and it was fairly expensive - but it has wonderful decorative panels (some sort of metal) which actually have the artist's signature. I haven't seen anyting like it elsewhere, here or in Mexico. It weighs a ton, so I expect it would have been very expensive to ship. We actually bought a few wonderful items from that woman. I don't where we did her buying in Mexico (she was Mexican), but the quality was very good.

We do have a lot of nice decorative items that we've brought home from Mexico as well. It seems like we pick up new stuff every time we visit.

We just got back from a trip to Australua - trip was good, but my very favourite place where we stayed (in terms of accommodation) was a B&B - the host had spent a lot of time in Mexico and the Caribbean - lot of white walls and Mexican art - it felt great!
