From San Miguel de Allende to Oaxaca

We could fly, but it will take a minimum of 6 hours, with a stop in Mexico City.
Has anyone driven? What are the roads like? Safe, Beautiful drive etc.
Any help will be appreciated. This next January we will be on the road or in the air???

I've driven the route about a dozen times. There are portions of the drive that are very scenic, most notably the section between Puebla and Oaxaca. There's a lot of truck traffic until you get on the Arco Norte, and more traffic around Puebla of course. If you're not in a hurry, there's a number of easy stops to make the trip more interesting. Teotihuacan, Tula, Padre Tembleque acueducto, and Puebla where we usually spend a night going or coming from San Miguel, though we've stayed in Cholula and Tlaxcala too. As far as safety, there have been a couple of incidents reported at the Texmelucan toll caseta outside of Puebla, but that's been a year or so. I've not heard of anything since. My recollection of one was that the people were robbed after they pulled onto the shoulder to do something, I forget what. Best to just stay in the car there. Otherwise, it's an easy, safe drive.

I might add, not knowing your immigration status, be sure to have your passports and FMM's (if tourists) as there are usually federale checkpoints somewhere along that route. Not shakedowns, just checks of documents.

We may need to do this in one day. Given various traffic issues what is the approximate driving time?
Thanks

I've never actually driven it in just 1 day. Google shows about 8.5 hours. I'd budget for at least 9 barring any accidents or blockades nearing Oaxaca. But I've read of some that do it in 8.
