Fresh from Mexico..the good and bad
 

First the bad: It took my family an hour to get a rent-a car because the rental co. neglected to tell us that they require a $2000 deposit on your credit card to rent. They do not bill your card but the money is tied up and you are unable to use it. Fortunately someone overheard our problem and new a second cousins sister who had a rental co two blocks from the airport.They came and picked us up, took a $200 deposit plus $180 in mexican insurance and we were all set.


Next on the road to our resort. This was my fourth time to Mexico and my last. This trip consisted of
me, my wife and two kids(8yr/15yr).

Leaving the airport and not even
making it to the posted speed limit
we were waved to the side of the
road by the police. The police officer stuck his head in the passenger side window in front of my
wife's face pointed at us each for not having our seatbelts on. My
youngest had hers on. Three tickets
each, wanted to see my license which
he then took and told me to follow
him to the police station (by this
time we had been on the road in Mexico ten minutes) The fine was to
be $250. My wife started crying, I
raised my voice and started arguing,
eventually it was settled on the side of the road. I give him $100,
get my license back and leave..Welcome to Cancun!!

We then made it to our resort and
after checking in relaxed and cooled
down by the pool. During our stay we
drove two hours south to a remote spot past Talum and me and my son
did some fishing for barracuda, we
caught one each, cooked the fish on
the beach and had a great time.My wife and daughter relaxed and snorkeled on the beach while we fished.

Next day hung out at the resort
(Mayan Palace) and relaxed etc...

Then off to Xcaret which is a zoo/seaworld type place but so large
and great you will be beat by the end of the day. You can snorkel on the beach, they have Mexican theme
shows and the people and place was
great. You can even snorkel through
underground caverns that go on forever, which helps to cool off.

We also did the shopping thing a couple times, once in the evening
and once during the heat of the day.
Not bad if you don't mind haggeling
for just about everything. All in all it was a great trip but with not
being able to trust the police who
are everywhere I would not go back.

Why rent a car? Every place I've ever been in Mexico taxis are plentiful and cheap, and I am never tempted to rent a car.

Would have cost you a lot more than a $100 in California. Why would you be so foolish as to NOT USE YOUR SEAT BELTS? You got off super cheap my friend!

Not to be unkind at all but it's always good to do your homework no matter where you travel in the world. I've posted before on how to drive in MX as have many others. If you break the law by speeding or not wearing seat belts or talking on your cell phone you will get pulled over. Sometimes you even get pulled over if you're not breaking the law. Knowing what to do in that circumstance is advisable. Many different forums have information on what to do if this happens. Obviously you've been to MX before and not had this happen. There are many other places in the world to travel and I wish you well on your travels there.

Well I´m sorry to tell you that is a rule of Mexico to use seatbelts, but you were worst by giving him 100 dolars and I know all people do that in Mexico, but well.

IMHO you would do better to go someplace other than Cancun. There are many great places and sad to say Cancun is no longer one of them.

Susie, I don't think the Mayan Palace is in Cancun.
