We'll be staying near flamingo beach, April 1-7 but we'll be flying to San Jose in March 31 and out April 8. What places nearby (cheap) do you recommend? We'll need to rent a car on the 1st, and would it be better to rent in the city or to go back to the airport? What can we do in San Jose in the meanwhile? we'll probably be waiting for some people from the group

I think I stayed at the Marriott. They picked me up from the airport and took me back the next time. Great area, a little pricier but safe and has all the convenience of home.
When does your flight land in SJ? We landed around 12pm and had plenty of time to hop on another flight and get to our next destination....

Check out:

www.hotelvillabonita.com

(B&B, Costa Rican owned, very sweet young couple, $50 per night--5 min. from airport)

www.orquideasinn.com

(A bit larger, about $80 per night, American owned, nice bar/restaurant, 15-20 min. from airport)

The El Presidente is nice. A bit pricier but safe, it's right in the downtown area so it's great for people watching.
