floods

read that there are major floods in CR..on Carribbean side I think, anyone hear about this? Has it affected the rest of the country at all?

Ally Jan 12th, 2005 11:53 AM

Yes, it's in all the Tico newspapers. It has only affected the Caribbean side but badly, with many roads out and many thousands of people misplaced and now in about 70 shelters that have been set up.

Does anyone have any more information on the floods. How would I find out about this?

We were at Sueno Azul resort near Las Horoquetes during the two worst days of rainfall. Fortunately the 2 bridges giving the ONLY access to the resort held together.

The night of the 8th the rain was astonishingly heavy - like nothing I have ever encountered anywhere, including 5 trips to CR. It is beyond my words to express the deluge. Fortunately for us, our resort was on the Rio Puerto Viejo, not the Sarapiqui which was worst hit. Still the Puerto Viejo was a brown raging torrent that was several feet above the level it had been when we arrived on the 7th.

At least one person was killed in the village of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, and when we left the area on the 10th, several were still missing. Many hundreds of homes were flooded.
La Selva Biological Station experieneced major flooding as well.

Thanks for the news Jerry, the Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui/La Selva area is one of our favorites and I have been wondering how it was doing.
