Fishing in Cabo
Has anyone been fishing in Cabo? I am wanting to go in July to fish for Blue Marlin. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just returned from a Memorial Day trip in Cabo which included fishing. We caught 17 Yellowfin Tuna and spotted a school of marlin, but didn't hook one. The fishing is starting to pick up and July would be a good time for marlin and any other big game fish. If you are looking for a charter, let me know and I can put you in touch with a colleague. He runs a 40' luxury yacht with all the amenities, rods, tackle, bait, food and drink. You can visit the site at www.libresportfishingcabo.com.

We went a in May '98 & used the SolMar fleet twice--at a bout 1/2 the price of the fleet mentioned earlier-left at 7, returned around 3 for about $350 for 4 people. Have seen mentioned Pisces Fleet @ same price. Go to www.allaboutcabo.com. We are going back 7/17 - 7/24 for marlin, too. Happy fishing.

You'll have a great time! Fishing will be very good, although the weather will be miserable!!! (Hey, it's paradise but it's not perfect!)

I fished there in late June 2 years ago and did very well, especially sailfish. We had a hard time getting a bait to the marlin because of all the Sailfish,
but, oh well, life should always be so tough.

Both the charter companies above do a great job if you want a big boat. Personally I prefer the smaller super-pangas, only about $175 a day for the boat and they get on the water early enough to chase Wahoo at sunrise. Check out Leonardos Sportfishing out of the Palmilla or Twin Dolphin resorts, they do a very nice job!

Have fun!!

Thanks for all your replies. JoAnn: We are planning to go from 7/15-7/19. Will you be staying at Solmar and using their fishing fleet again? Are you hoping to fish for blue marlin? Is the tax rate in Cabo really 25%? Did you have any stomach problems from eating/drinking the food?

Jeremy-we check in on 7/17 @ the Melia Real Cabo San Lucas (on the corrididor)for the week. We are doing a timeshare exchange, so can't help you with the hotel tax info. Haven't booked any fishing trips yet. Think it might be just the 2 guys, and they want to catch Marlin, but will try for anything. Last year, we got tuna & wahoo (+ the 150# stripe marlin) and the people we went with took the fish and had the SolMar chef prepare it. Wonderful meal. We stayed down the beach @ the Finesterra. Have you been there before?

Jeremy-I forgot to answer part of your question--no we did not have any problems with the water or food. Bottled water was served many places, and we kept some available-just in case. Read on one of the menus that 90% of what we ate there came from the US! Their main industry/income is Tourism, and cater to US/Canadian Tourist.
The people were very friendly and helpful--love it when you say even a few words of Spanish to them. A one dollar tip (in US $) is sooo appreciated.
We had an excellent Italian meal at Romeo's and Julietta's -- about the 1st street past the Finesterra property, turn left (small sign at corner) and you'll see it. Also had been told to eat at the OLD Trailer Park (there are 2 I think)-took a cab and the place was in a trailer park! Menu is on the board, kind of pricey, but they had a second plate for $8. I got the same size portions as my husband, but he got the fish and there was plenty to share. I have also heard "The Office" - on the Corridor I think, is also good. I will look through my stuff and see if I can find the map we got from the timeshare man (who lives there) with more names, if you are interested.
When you get to the airport--walk straight towards the front door, ignoring all the timeshare people offering free (only if you agree to take a tour)rides to your hotel. Go to the VAN booth and share a van for about $10 each. A cab would have cost us about $50 to where you are staying. Make your reservations for the return trip at your hotel at least the day before.
Email me direct if you have any more questions--maybe I can help. Have a good time! And catch a bunch.
