First trip to Honduras!
Heading out on our first trip to Honduras June 10 through 20. Any thoughts or tips appreciated!
We are planning to meet up with an old friend who lives in San Pedro Sula, see Copan, Omoa, travel to La Ceiba, then diving and relaxing on Utila. We will be traveling with a local guide so that will help a ton! Feedback on Utila? We were thinking of Captain Morgan's dive center. Any reports on them? Suggestions on a better dive shop? I am certified, but my wife and daughter want to do the Open Water class. |
One thing we really enjoyed doing while we were in Copan was spending the night at Finca Cisne. It's a family run coffe and cardamom farm with son Carlos as the host. The horseback riding was some of the best and the food which is all homemade is delicious. The cardamom coffee is something I still think about.

You are lucky ducks, though I'll be heading to Guatemala then after a month in México so I have no room for complaints.
We've had 3 wonderful visits to Honduras in the last 5 years and the photos, blogs, and travelogues are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/staceyholeman/collections I'm not sure what you're budget is but on Utila we LOVE the Lighthouse: http://aboututila.com/AccomInfo/Ligh...otel/Index.htm We paid $300/week in 2008 for a nice big room with 2 queen beds, a kitchenette, and cable tv (not usually a big deal for us but we were there during the 2008 summer Olympics). There's a big wrap-around porch over the water and it's in a quieter part of town by the bridge leading to the old airport area where we find great flyfishing and snorkeling and there's a decent small beach (you pay a few bucks to use it). Our favorite restaurant, RJ's Barbecue, and my favorite dive shop, Alton's, are just a few doors away. There's more on tripadvisor.com if you'd like to check it out. http://www.altonsdiveshop.com/ Happy trails! Please post a travelogue! |
Thanks so much for the info! I'm sure we'll wish we had more time at Copan! The coffee and cardamom farm sounds really nice.
hopefulist; thanks for the info on Utila! Have you heard of Captain Morgan's dive shop? Why Altons? They are one of the shops we looked at, but Capt. Morgans includes lodging with the class. We will make a point to hit RJ's. Feel free to send any other tips our way! I'll check out your info. Thanks again! |
hopefulist; I tried looking at your blogs and travelogue, but I must be doing something wrong. When I follow your link all I see are your pictures. Should I be going somewhere else?
Thanks! |
Never mind about the blogs, I found them, I just wasn't looking hard enough! :-)

Re: Alton's, I checked out a bunch of shops and loved the feel of that one. I dove with Utila Dive Center in 2006 - a whole different story. Don't know Capt. Morgan's, just the name. Keep us posted!
