2 ideal locations for first timers are Arenal volcano and Manuel Antonio National Park and beach. Great areas. Each are about 3 hours from SJO airport, but about 5 hours apart from each other. The two combined will give you a great overview and offer your children a lot of nice wildlife viewing opportunities.

Shillmac is known for giving terrific advice on these boards. I second her recs for Arenal and Manuel Antonio. I visited those 2 locations on my first trip down there last year and they were both wonderful.

Costa Rica is a beautiful, fascinating country. Be sure to ask more questions as you start to get a feel for the types of activities and experiences you are most interested in. There are a lot of great people here who can help you fill in the details.

My wife and I will be traveling to CR in July. We'll be staying at the Hotel Costa Verde there near the Manuel Antonio National Park. Our kids are 4 and 1 (in fact, our older one will be turning 4 on our second day in country). Any advice on activities with kids that small?

Our little one loved the beach (18 months when we were there last year). So we took it easy, relaxed, and spent our time inside the park looking at animals and enjoyed that second little calm beach. Enjoy!
