I have heard only positive things about this hotel in guide books and on other message boards - check out the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree, I think that there is a post about Las Tortugas there now. I have tried to get reservations there twice and have been shut out both times bec they were all booked up. The hotel itself is v. small although they do have additional housing in nearby apartments. good luck. Ruth in Maine.

We loved Las Tortugas when we were there in September and are planning a trip back in May. It is a small little place, but the staf was wonderful, the food was excellent, the rooms were comfortable and the beach is beautiful. It's not fancy, but we thought it was perfect!

I thought Las Tortugas looked really shabby and a lot of surf dudes were hanging around the place (not that I have anything against surf dudes). There is a major problem of car thefts near the hotel. I stayed at Bula Bula and the place was wonderful, but the location is not on the beach.

We just got back from CR and stayed at Las Tortugas for 5 nights. I thought it was fine. My surfer husband thought it was terrible for the first 24 hours but then he got into the atmosphere. It takes some getting used to. I thought the price was great and the beach is fabulous. There were 4 of us and we had plenty of room to spread out in our room that we came to nickname the cave. Lets just say that our room was NOT bright and sunny and there were some repairs that have needed to be done for some time and I doubt they will be done soon, however the restaurant and pool area are charming and the people are very nice. The food wasn't the greatest but it wasn't expensive. There is a restaurant called Rip Jacks that we liked within walking distance. It's to the left when you are looking at beach. Have fun!

The best surfing is during the coming tide at almost high tide. That's about the only time it's not good swimming. I am not a good swimmer and I could swim there at any other time. It's a bit rough but you can body surf or boggie board as well. They have boggie boards and surf boards there. You have to find the person to ask. Hopefully Surgio will be there, he's really helpful.
