Eruotraveller: Do you have an idea of what you want to do. You are asking about a day driving, but many people plan to be taken, for instance, to the bolivian border, and they do not have into account the driving back... It is not the same to start and finish in Salta, than 400 kms north... you have to deal directly with the guide.

Flintstone, I think I posted this in my other thread specifically addressing the cost of a guide but $150 for a driver for a day is just not something we are willing to pay.

We plan on fully exploring the area, stopping and staying in whichever town appeals to us along the way.

We will base ourselves in Salta for a couple of nights and then fly by the seat of our pants for the remainer of the time.

I expect we will spend 7-9 days in this region as it really appeals to me from my research so far.

I think I also mentioned in the other thread that when I posted a question regarding driving in the Salta area on the TT travel forum, there wasn't a single person who said it was better done with a guide and driver.

The posters on TT who had driven the route highly recommended I do it on my own.

I typically do not hire a guide and I travel fairly extensively. I much prefer the adventure of traveling independently.

Thanks everyone for your tips and advise!
