Have you thought about flying air courier? They have been posting cheap members-only rates to Brazil for months now. You will have to join, but the savings should more than make up for the difference. Check them out at www.courier.org.

If you are flying to Sao Paulo from the west coast (LA or San Francisco), the cheapest way is by hopping on the Korea/Japan/Los Angeles/Sao Paulo run on VASP Airline. As it is the millenium, prices might be higher, but I paid ~$600 last year. Contact consolidators in both cities (San Francisco and Los Angeles) such as Santini tours (Berkeley) or Tucanos Travel (San Rafael), or Paulo Travel (San Francisco). They all peddle these cheap tickets. I don't recall the names of the travel agencies in LA. You can find a complete listing of these agencies in a monthly newspaper called "Brazil Today", published in Northern California, but is distributed all over the US/Canada. Hope this helps.
