Thanks for that link MFNYC. It really looks fantastic. Much better idea than a hotel. La Jolla looks nice.

Still unsure what to do but will make a final decision soon.

I appreciate all your great input.

We are a family of 4. My kids are now 11. We are not really all-inclusive types either, so when we go to the Riviera Maya, we stay in Akumal, Mexico. We've been there 3 times, and always rent a condo called La Bahia through Caribbean Fantasy. I haven't checked recently, but La Bahia is probably more than the $100 per night that you are looking for, but there might be other properties a little closer to that. Google their website if you want to check it out...they manage many properties in Akumal and the Riviera Maya. Akumal is a small village of condos and houses right on the ocean with about 10 restaurants, a couple ice cream places, a fabulous bakery/restaurant called Turtle Bay, and grocery stores. We snorkel at the beach called Half Moon Bay right in front of our condo. It's a bit rocky there, so for a swimming beach we head into "town" aka Akumal Beach. We always rent a car when we are there so we can explore. Activities that we have done there are Tulum ruins, Coba ruins, Aktun-Chen caves, Gran Cenote, Casa Cenote, snorkeling at Yal-ku Lagoon (our favorite's about .5 mi from Akumal), Xcaret (the Disneyland of the Riviera Maya).
