Family Trip to Playa del Carmen in March
My husband, 28 year old son, 24 year old daughter and myself are planning to go to Playa del Carmen for my 60th birthday in mid March. We were first looking at Antigua and St Barths but I did not think there would be enough to do given that we don't just like to hang at a pool/beach the whole time. We are thinking about staying at Rosewood Mayakoba or Belmond Maroma or a combination of the two. Does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations?

The Yucatan offers much more than just AI resorts and theme parks. It behooves you to explore. The easiest way (IMO) is to rent a car (try Easyway) and plan to base in more than one place to avoid long drives. To see ruins Chichen Itza and Ek Balam (pyramid to climb), and flamingos at Rio Largatos, the charming town of Valladolid is a good base. You could come back to the coast via Coba ruins (pyramid to climb)to Tulum to stay, for ruins, beach, Snorkeling at Akumal with giant turtles, and floating a Maya canal and more in the Sian Ka'an biosphere, and then return to PdC. There are also cenotes all over the place to visit on a hot afternoon, after visiting a ruin in the morning.

Rosewood Mayacoba I have only driven past several times but it is kind of isolated there by itself, so I do agree with renting a car so you can get around to see things and not be held hostage to expensive tours. It has a reputation for being very pricey.
Maybe look at Secrets Maroma? Don't know anything about Belmond. |
jamie99 and SambaChula Thanks for your recommendations and comments. I think we have decided to do 4 nights in the Belmond and 2 nights at Rosewood. The Rosewood is quite pricey!!
