Family Christmas in Oaxaca: a good idea?

I'm contemplating a family Christmas in Oaxaca (city or near it) for two oldfolk, six thirty-somethings, and three grandchildren aged 4 and under. We'd be coming from Italy, New York, and California, and we're not rich -- but for a complex variety of reasons it's something we would much love to do. I love the Yucatan and Chiapas, and we've all been to more touristy places in Mexico as well, but never to Oaxaca.

I don't see much on Fodor's or elsewhere online to suggest that this is a brilliant (or sensible) idea, so I'll be grateful for suggestions and advice. Gracias.

I would sure do it if I could. I have been there many times for New Years and have always wanted to go for Christmas. The downside is this is a busy crowded time of year and you would need to make reservations right now. There is lots going on through January 6th. The weather is usually great that time of year- sometimes a little cold at night. If you can get everything arranged in advance I would do it.

Christmas in Mexico is a magical experiences. while I have not spent it in Oaxaca I have spent xmas in PV (3), Guadalajara (twice) & once in Mexico City at the Majestic over looking the Zocalo. All were wonderful. Christmas as you probaly know starts early in december & runs into the new year. The variety of parades etc. starting with those concerning the miricule at The Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe are moving to even a non beliver. I would vote yes.
P.S We are spending Xmas this year in Zihuatanejo.

LaVisiteure,

My apologies on intruding on this thread. Have seen an old posting of yours with regard to apartment rentals via welcome2france ... Did you eventually book and stay with them in Paris ? Would appreciate any feedback. Many thanks.

p.s. Oaxaca sounds fab !
